Pirastro Upright Bass Strings

Pirastro is undoubtedly the #1 upright bass strings maker in the world. They have an incredible vast array of different strings, at all sorts of different gauges, weights and most of all, for different playing applications. First and foremost, is their classical upright bass strings collection. We always point out here what is strictly classical, strictly jazz and then some hybrid type strings that do great in both genres. Hybrid strings are somewhat important since the bass is pretty much the most notable instrument where the player can play both genre (jazz and/or classical) on the same bass in the same day!

Pirastro offers the very best in quality workmanship. You will not have to worry about premature wear, breakage or any kind of defects in the manufacturing process. Even their cheapest strings, will be better made than other way more expensive strings.

For years they relied heavily on their Flexocor brand: The Flexocors being a classical oriented string come in light, medium and heavy gauge, with medium almost always being the gauge people order. These still, after 40 years, are a very reliable and high performing string. Next, their Original Flexocors: These tend to be a tad warmer and a little less crisp that the regular Flexocors. The newest brand being the Flexocor Deluxe bass strings, combine the recent technology of metals combined to make a higher tension (same as the older brands) yet feel and play 'looser' with a slightly more open feel and sound on the bass. Remember folks, it all depends on your bass!!! Sure, there are general trends with brands, but what can sound really great on one bass, can be quite different on another. These though are generalities that we describe here and very dependable. Trust us here, we know basses and bass strings!

Passione upright bass strings: Passione is a dark metal string, with one of the easiest and most responsive D and G strings. If you are a classical player and one of the major issues you are having with your bass being a tight or edgy sounding G, then definitely try a medium Passione G upright bass string. The D, equally so. Another improvement in these later years with Pirastro bass strings is that they have figured out that the E strings (in general) need to be slightly more higher tension than the rest of the strings set. IF there were/are any complaints about their older brands, it was sometimes that the E strings would be a little too 'spongy' or too soft and hard to get the same bow attack or spicatto on. For instance, it is still quite common that players buy a nice set of Flexocor or Flexocor Originals and then add in a Permanent E string on the end. It doesn't sound brighter usually, just a little more (needed) punch there on the E side. (Some will even put a Thomastik Spirocore medium on the E, but that depends on how bright your bass sounds: It is usually ok for medium to dark sounding basses. Bright basses....maybe not. Passiones also come in a stiffer (Stark) gauge for those that like a little more stiffness in their action.

Evah Pirazzi upright bass strings have to be the most successful bass strings of the past 40 years. While Pirastro invented and designed these strings for the classical player, (more gut like feel and tension), it is both the classical AND the jazz players that love these strings. These, are THE "hybrid" strings that are ideal for both, and/or either jazz or classical player. The most popular set here for sure is the Evah Pirazzi Weich. Weich in German translates to "light", but these are not light strings. The first sets to come out were simply called "Orchestra" gauge, but players noticed that the strings were (very slightly) fatter or wider than the average bass strings. The Orchestra gauge Evahs make only a slight difference and when the Weichs came out, players hardly noticed any power loss, but love the agility of that weich gauge string. Hands down, this string is the best for those studying bass in college: if you are playing both jazz and classical, you can easily get along without having to ever change your strings out for those special gigs. These are perfect for the in demand bass player that plays in regional orchestras and plays jazz at the same time (using the same bass!)

Obligato bass strings are very similar to the Evahs. In fact, they came out first before Evah Pirazzi. They are made with very similar technology: A synthetic core that stretches the first couple of days while new. The Obligatos can also be considered a "hybrid" string and we still have some very avid customers for Obligato. They play and sound just a tad differently. If we were to 'split hairs', one might say that the Obligatos lean more towards the classical side, but again, they still work for jazz. We think that the Evahs tend to have a little more pizzicato (right hand) sustain than the Obligatos.

Does Pirastro even make a string strictly meant for jazz? Yes, they are called "The Jazzer". They are very similar to Thomoastik Spirocore mediums, but at the same time a little different. We notice that sometimes and on some basses, the lower end of The Jazzer strings have a little more growl and power. Again, this depends on the bass and the way they are played.

Here we offer just about every Pirastro upright bass string. If you have a question, feel free to call anyone at Arizona Fine Violins

Confusion about "Solo Strings": Solo bass strings are designed and meant to be tuned up one whole step above 'orchestra' tuning. That means, the top string which is normally the "G" string, is tuned all the way up to an A. The 2nd string (D) is also tuned up to an E and so on and so on. Mostly players that have a recital or jury in college will buy these to play on. The piano parts on most solo parts actually are meant for and tune up the whole step, so they almost HAVE to buy these solo gauge strings.

Important note about upright bass solo strings: Some that have really tight basses (you know what we mean!), or players that suffer left hand issues, can often buy and install solo gauge strings on their basses and then tune normally (not up in pitch). This will make for a much looser feel on the bass and will not be as hard to play with the left hand.
